Zimbabwe is witnessing the return of over 60,000 of its nationals from South Africa as part of a government initiative aimed at facilitating their reintegration. Official statistics reveal that 11,065 individuals were repatriated through collaborative efforts between the South African and Zimbabwean authorities, while 47,703 opted for voluntary return. Among those repatriated were 2,449 adult men, 2,407 adult women, and 4,955 minors, highlighting the diverse demographics of those heading back to their home country.
In a move to ensure a smooth transition, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called on families and communities to extend a warm welcome to these returnees. The government has rolled out comprehensive measures designed to support a safe and dignified reintegration process. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to facilitate the return of Zimbabweans from abroad and reinvigorate the local economy with their skills and experiences.
Government spokesperson George Charamba emphasized the potential economic benefits of the returnees, particularly noting the expertise many bring back in the horticulture sector. This influx of skilled individuals is poised to bolster Zimbabwe’s agricultural output and enhance its export capabilities. The horticulture sector, in particular, stands to gain from these newly acquired skills, potentially leading to increased productivity and economic growth.
The Zimbabwean government views this development as an opportunity to harness the talents and abilities of its returning citizens. Charamba pointed out that the country’s expanding economy is already creating new opportunities, which can be leveraged by those coming back from South Africa.
