Walmart will launch its first branded stores in South Africa in October 2025, marking a significant step in its expansion into the African retail market.
The new outlets will offer groceries, household essentials, clothing, technology, and global products, alongside locally sourced items. Suppliers introduced during Walmart’s South African Growth Summit earlier this year will also feature prominently on the shelves.
According to Walmart International CEO Kath McLay, the aim is to blend the company’s signature low prices and international standards with South Africa’s cultural richness. Stores are being designed with wide aisles, modern layouts, and digital features to enhance customer experience.
Massmart CEO Miles van Rensburg emphasized that affordability, customer service, and strong community ties will remain central to Walmart’s local strategy. Further details on store locations, hiring plans, and community initiatives are expected in the coming months. The company also intends to invest in jobs, local suppliers, and sustainability efforts as part of its entry.
