Beat the Heat: A Guide to Summer Travel with Your Pet

by admin477351

Summer vacations are a classic, but the heat can pose serious risks for our furry friends. Travelling with a pet during hot weather requires extra vigilance and specific preparations to keep them safe, cool, and comfortable.

Hydration is non-negotiable. Always have fresh, cool water available. A collapsible water bowl is a must-have for any summer outing. On road trips, offer water at every stop. You can even add ice cubes to their bowl to keep it cooler for longer. Never assume they can wait until the next stop for a drink.

Car safety is paramount. A car can become a deadly oven in minutes, even on a mildly warm day with the windows cracked. Never, ever leave your pet unattended in a vehicle. When driving, use sunshades on the windows to block direct sunlight and ensure the air conditioning is reaching their carrier.

Plan your activities around the coolest parts of the day. Schedule long drives or outdoor exploration for the early morning or late evening. Asphalt and sand can burn their paw pads, so check the ground temperature before letting them walk. A pre-travel trim for long-haired breeds can also help, but consult a groomer or vet first, as their coat also provides some protection from the sun.
