South Africa has solidified its position as a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts, ranking as the second-best location for wildlife holidays globally, according to a recent international survey. This accolade highlights the country’s appeal for nature and safari tourism, drawing visitors eager to explore its rich ecosystems and diverse wildlife.

The survey, which gathered responses from 2,400 travelers across 12 countries, revealed that 72% of participants consider wildlife experiences a crucial factor when selecting a holiday destination. This growing interest in wildlife tourism is mirrored by a significant 211% increase in global searches for “wildlife holidays” over the past year.

In the survey, Australia claimed the top spot as the leading wildlife destination, with South Africa following closely behind. The country outperformed other popular wildlife locations such as Kenya, Canada, and China. Visitors to South Africa are drawn to a wide array of experiences, from the iconic Big Five safaris and whale watching to birding and encounters with African penguins, thanks to its diverse ecosystems and rich biodiversity.

The survey also indicates a shift in traveler preferences, with a growing number of tourists seeking immersive nature experiences rather than traditional sightseeing. This trend underscores a broader move towards more meaningful and engaging travel experiences.

Globally, the giant panda emerged as the top animal that travelers wish to see in the wild, with elephants, kangaroos, koalas, and whales also making the list. Among Africa’s famous Big Five, the elephant was the only species to make it into the global top five, highlighting its enduring appeal to wildlife enthusiasts worldwide.
