In a notable achievement, South Africa has gone over 460 days without experiencing nationwide electricity load-shedding, a feat credited by President Cyril Ramaphosa to the efforts of the African National Congress (ANC). He highlighted these accomplishments during the ANC manifesto launch in anticipation of the upcoming local government elections on November 4. Ramaphosa attributed this sustained period of stability to enhanced electricity generation and improved management at Eskom, the country’s primary electricity supplier.
Eskom reports that since May 16, 2025, South Africa has not faced any load shedding challenges, thanks to the improved performance of power stations and a decrease in unplanned outages. This marks a significant turnaround for the nation that has long struggled with frequent power cuts affecting daily life and economic activities.
Despite the national success in reducing power cuts, some communities still face load reduction measures. These are implemented as a preventive strategy to safeguard overloaded local electricity networks. Such localized reductions remain a concern, particularly in areas like Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, where efforts are ongoing to address these challenges.
President Ramaphosa expressed optimism that the issue of load reduction will be resolved completely across the nation. He emphasized the continuous work being done to ensure that all areas benefit from the improvements in the electricity supply, reinforcing the commitment to eliminate these interruptions entirely.
