Australia’s Chase Derailed as Proteas’ Spinners Take Control

by admin477351

A promising Australian run chase was dramatically derailed as South Africa’s spinners took complete control to seal a 98-run victory in the first ODI. Keshav Maharaj was the hero, with his 5-33 causing a collapse from which the hosts could not recover.

Chasing 297, Australia reached 0-60 and appeared to be in a strong position. However, the introduction of debutant Prenelan Subrayen and the masterful Maharaj changed everything. The pair instigated a collapse that saw six wickets fall for just 29 runs, putting the Proteas firmly in the driver’s seat.

The South African total of 8-296 was built on the back of impressive batting from Aiden Markram (82) and Temba Bavuma (65). They navigated the Australian attack with skill, setting a target that proved too steep in the end.

Despite a fighting 88 from captain Mitch Marsh, the damage was irreparable. The Australian middle order’s inability to handle the turning ball was exposed, leading to a final total of 198 and a significant defeat.
