Authorities are investigating “all angles” in a car explosion that killed eight people and injured 19 in Delhi, Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed. After visiting the blast site near the Red Fort, Shah stated, “We do not consider any angle closed. We will investigate all angles with determination.” He added that the cause would remain unclear until forensic analysis is complete.
The blast occurred on Monday evening at a red light. A car stopped outside the Red Fort metro station exploded, according to Police Commissioner Satish Golcha. The explosion was powerful, sparking a fire that destroyed over a dozen other vehicles, including rickshaws and motorcycles, and sending the crowded street into a panic.
The registered owner of the car involved in the incident has reportedly been detained for questioning, a key first step in the investigation. Meanwhile, the 19 injured are being treated at a government hospital. Witnesses described a horrific scene, with one resident, Om Prakash Gupta, seeing “body parts all over” and another feeling “shock waves” from the “very strong explosion.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X that he is reviewing the situation with the Home Minister and offered condolences to the families of the victims. “Those affected are being assisted by authorities,” he said.
The incident has triggered a high alert in the financial capital of Mumbai, the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh, and large train stations across India. This is the most significant blast in Delhi in over a decade, recalling the 2011 High Court explosion.
