The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has commenced its 2026 Filing Season with the introduction of innovative digital features aimed at streamlining the tax filing process and enhancing security measures for taxpayers. Since the beginning of July 2026, the agency has successfully auto-assessed over 1.9 million taxpayers, disbursing around R8 billion in tax refunds within the initial 72-hour period. Throughout this filing season, SARS anticipates releasing more than six million auto-assessments.
This year’s enhancements include the deployment of more precise auto-assessments, leveraging an expanded range of third-party data. Additionally, taxpayers can expect improved self-service capabilities through eFiling and the SARS MobiApp, along with features like biometric verification, two-factor authentication, and AI-powered support. The new system also allows for document uploads via WhatsApp and provides digital delivery of tax notices.
SARS has advised taxpayers who have been selected for auto-assessment to utilize these digital platforms to review their assessments, thereby avoiding unnecessary trips to physical service centers. The agency emphasizes the efficiency and convenience of these online services as a means to facilitate the filing process.
In light of these developments, SARS has also issued a caution to the public to remain vigilant against phishing scams and fraudulent refund schemes. The agency reiterates that it does not solicit passwords, one-time pins (OTPs), or banking information through email, SMS, phone calls, or social media, urging taxpayers to be cautious and protect their personal information.
