Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has pledged to raise South Africa’s SASSA old-age grant to R4,500 per month should his party take power. Malema made this promise during the EFF’s provincial manifesto launch in North West, highlighting the party’s commitment to safeguarding social grants and enhancing financial support for pensioners.
Malema criticized the ruling African National Congress (ANC) for what he considers inadequate assistance for the elderly, arguing that pensioners, having contributed to the nation through taxes during their working years, deserve more substantial support. Currently, the old-age grant is set at R2,400 per month, with those over 75 receiving R2,420. Malema also took issue with the R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, labeling it insufficient, and advocated for the introduction of a new grant aimed at unemployed graduates.
In a separate address in Mpumalanga, Malema reiterated his proposal for the R4,500 old-age grant, pointing out that many pensioners financially support their children and grandchildren. He asserted that the government could manage the increased grant by utilizing public funds more effectively.
The issues of social grants, unemployment, and the escalating cost of living are anticipated to be significant topics as political parties prepare for the local government elections scheduled for November 4. Malema’s promises come as part of the broader campaign efforts as the EFF seeks to position itself as a champion for greater financial equity and support for South Africa’s vulnerable populations.
