South Africa is bracing for harsh winter weather as forecasts predict heavy rainfall, snowfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms across several provinces. Authorities have issued a series of severe weather warnings, with an Orange Level 8 warning highlighting the potential for heavy rain in certain areas of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape. This could lead to flooding on roads and bridges, dangerous river conditions, and possible road closures. Between East London and Morgan Bay, residents face Orange Level 5 warnings for significant flooding, mudslides, and potential displacement.
In addition to these severe alerts, Yellow Level warnings have been issued for other regions. Flooding risks are present in the eastern parts of the Western Cape and sections of the Eastern Cape, classified under a Yellow Level 4 warning. Snowfall and icy road conditions are anticipated in high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape under a Yellow Level 2 warning. Coastal regions between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay are advised to prepare for strong winds and rough seas, while damaging waves are expected along parts of the southern coastline. Severe thunderstorms, accompanied by heavy rain, hail, and excessive lightning, are also a concern in affected areas.
Provincial forecasts indicate varying weather conditions across the country. Gauteng will experience cloudy and cool weather with isolated showers and thunderstorms, while Mpumalanga expects morning fog over the Lowveld, followed by partly cloudy conditions with similar weather patterns. Limpopo is forecasted to be cloudy, windy, and cold to very cold, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. The North West province will see cloudy, windy, and cool conditions with isolated showers and thunderstorms. In the Free State, cold to very cold conditions are predicted, along with scattered showers and thunderstorms.
The Northern Cape anticipates cloudy, windy, and very cold weather with isolated showers and thunderstorms, while coastal areas will face moderate to fresh south-easterly winds. The Western Cape is preparing for cold and cloudy conditions with widespread rain in eastern areas and light snow expected over the high-lying regions of the Central Karoo. Strong coastal winds are also forecast in this region. Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape will endure very cold conditions, widespread showers, thunderstorms, and snowfall in high-altitude areas, alongside strong coastal winds. KwaZulu-Natal will have morning fog inland, followed by cloudy and cold weather, with widespread showers and thunderstorms expected, although northern areas might see less rain.
Authorities are advising residents in affected areas to stay informed through local weather updates, avoid flooded roads, and exercise caution near rivers, coastlines, and mountain passes. The weather conditions are expected to be very cold, wet, and windy across much of the Eastern Cape, central and eastern Western Cape, and southern parts of the Northern Cape, with snowfall likely over mountain peaks and higher elevations, and flooding remaining a significant concern in parts of the Western and Eastern Cape.
